Georgia Tax Law Changes

The Georgia Tax Laws for leasing a vehicle changed on January 1, 2018.  Leasing a new vehicle can now be considered a viable option for consumers looking to drive a new car in the new year.

Pursuant to House Bill (HB) 340, the calculation of TAVT as it relates to new leased vehicles will change effective January 1, 2018. Beginning January 1, 2018, leased vehicles no longer will be taxed on the full value of the vehicle. Instead, TAVT will be calculated by multiplying the tax rate by "the total of base payments pursuant to the lease agreement."

The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) has finalized new Rules and Regulations designed to incorporate this change. View finalized DOR regulations. The final regulations by DOR state that, for new vehicles that are leased, TAVT will be calculated by multiplying the tax rate by "the total number of base payments, including down payments, pursuant to the lease agreement."
